This Chevy truck got an incredible five-star rating in Car and Driver Magazine, which is a pretty difficult thing for any truck to do. The 2016 Chevrolet Colorado is the mid-size champion that's bursting at the seams to get out and show off what it can do. It's longer than its much older brother, the Silverado, and it comes with a standard 2.5-Liter, 200-horsepower, four-cylinder engine; a hard working powerhouse that will get all of your hardest jobs done without breaking a sweat. Or you can choose either a 181-horsepower, 2.8-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder or a 3.6-liter V6 engine that boasts 305 horsepower. You can also get a crew cab or an extended cab, along with a five or six-foot bed â€" it's up to you. You can also choose between a six-speed automatic trans or a six-speed manual. The Colorado was introduced last year and as Chevy predicted, it is shooting to the top of the popularity charts. The gold stars keep piling up when the Colorado is mentioned to reviewers. Gas mileage is exceptional with the 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine; you get 20 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. The turbodiesel four-cylinder will give you 22 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. The four-cylinder provides good acceleration and ample power when you need it. The V6 is the most popular engine for the Colorado, but the turbodiesel amps the torque and has proven its towing capability many times over. The automatic transmission always gets the best start count from reviewers and test drivers. Handling is another thing altogether when talking about trucks, mid-size or full size. This rear-wheel drive truck (four-wheel is available) gives you a smooth ride and allows for maximum maneuverability, especially in turns and when braking. The transmission has smooth and quiet shifting and the ride in general is one that is similar to floating on a cloud…or at least in one's imagination it is. Towing is never a problem with the Colorado. The diesel engine can tow up to 7,700 pounds and hauling with the V6 can go up to just under 1,600 pounds.
There are several body trim levels for the Chevy Colorado, that meet the needs of just about every buyer. The four-door crew cab, with your choice of five or six-foot beds is great for people hauling, while the six-foot bed with the extended cab is fine for the loner driver who need the truck for more functional duties. If you want a longer bed to compete with full-size trucks, you can get a bed extender that lengthens the bed to accommodate loads up to eight feet long. To make it easy to keep your load in the bed, the Colorado has 17 tie down points right inside the bed. You can add a drop-in cargo bed liner or spray one on and there are cargo nets, racks and covers that are available, along with harnesses and trailer hitches and drop-in toolboxes. Have the designers thought of everything or what? Don't forget the nice bumper step that the thoughtful designers added for your convenience. And also, the tailgates that are extremely easy to lower that Chevy installed just to make life a little bit easier for you. The Colorado is such a piece of art that it almost feels like a sin to touch it, but go ahead, it was sculpted just for that purpose â€" touching it, and driving it, and using it for towing and hauling and just enjoying yourself in it. Some of the other artistic bits and pieces that the designers slipped into the Colorado for your pleasure are traction and stability control, trailer sway control, air conditioning, forward collision alert, 17-inch wheels, USB ports, hill start assist, hill descent control, six airbags, touchscreen controlled audio, an eight-inch touchscreen, a vehicle stability control system, and rollover mitigation technology.
Wow! The 2016 Colorado got a four-star rating for safety from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). I got high praise for the front crash test and the side crash test and in the rollover category. It makes you wonder how many good trucks they have to crash and destroy just to find out how safe they are. We'll look into that for a later article. Those ratings are for rear wheel and four-wheel drive versions of the Colorado.
